Theatre Arts Department Chair

Position Overview

We are seeking a Theatre Arts Department Chair to lead our high school Theatre Arts program. This is a full-time, salaried faculty role that includes teaching acting and musical theatre, directing or supervising productions, advising students, and shaping the future of our theatre curriculum. As a member of the Arts Leadership Team (ALT), this faculty member will also collaborate across departments to support interdisciplinary projects and school-wide initiatives.  The ideal candidate is a skilled artist-educator who brings experience in both professional theatre and teaching, and who is passionate about building a supportive, student-centered learning environment.

 

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Program Leadership:

  • Teach courses in acting, scene study, directing, movement, and related subjects
  • Design and implement curriculum aligned with National Theatre Standards and the tenets of project-based learning
  • Provide individualized support for Theatre Arts majors, including coaching for college pre-screens and audition preparation
  • Direct or assign directors for annual productions (plays and musicals)
  • Guide student-led creative work and interdisciplinary performances

 

Community Engagement & Communication:

  • Build strong relationships with students and families through clear communication and mentorship
  • Help shape Theatre Arts audition requirements for prospective students
  • Participate in admissions reviews and student recruitment events
  • Collaborate with visiting artists, regional theatres, and community partners
  • Promote student work through school communications and public-facing events

 

School-Wide Collaboration:

  • Serve as a member of the Arts Leadership Team (ALT)
  • Manage Theatre Arts supplies and department budget
  • Participate in faculty meetings, training, and school initiatives
  • Champion equity, inclusion, and access in all aspects of teaching and programming 

Qualifications

Required:

  • B.A. or B.F.A. in Theatre, Acting, Directing, or related field
  • Experience teaching or mentoring high school students
  • Professional experience in acting, directing, or musical theatre
  • Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills
  • A student-centered and inclusive approach to arts education

Preferred:

  • M.A., M.F.A., or advanced training in Theatre or Theatre Education
  • Leadership experience in arts education or production
  • Familiarity with project-based or experiential learning, competency-based education
  • Iowa teaching licensure   

Compensation & Advancement

Salary: $50,000–$65,000, based on experience
Benefits: Health insurance, 401K, paid sick and vacation time
Growth Opportunity: Eligible for future promotion to Dean of Arts
