ICON’s apartment-style residence hall offers a full-day arts experience and a vibrant, supportive community where students build lifelong friendships and lasting memories.
Location: Just one block from ICON’s main building, with a residential assistant (RA) to student ratio of 1:12.
Living Style: Students are placed in shared suites with 2–3 roommates. Returning students may request preferred roommates.
Daily Life: Each floor includes a laundry room, and students take weekly grocery trips as part of independent living routines.
Wellness & Support: The Dean of Students and RA team ensure students’ daily needs are met — from academic and emotional support to health care coordination.
Beyond the Studio: The Student Life Team curates after-school and weekend experiences, including concerts, shows, outdoor festivals, and peer-led activities around Iowa City.
50% of students at Iowa Conservatory choose to live in our on-campus residential halls. The boarding experience allows for students to have the unique opportunity to fully engage in our vibrant community, foster independence, and acquire valuable skills such as cohabitating with others.
Residence halls are staffed 24/7 by residential assistants who provide support, guidance, and a sense of community to students. They ensure safety, check students in, and enforce campus policies. Our personnel also teach life skills to benefit students beyond their experience with us.

As parents we believe we couldn't have chosen a better school for our child. We've seen our student become more actively involved in classes and student groups than at their previous school. The faculty its beyond kind and helpful when it comes to navigating applications and the day to day lives of the students. I've had no issues involving student safety or wondering if my student is being educated and cared for throughout the day. The student dorms are absolutely gorgeous and the students who live there are exceptionally happy with their living arrangements and RAs. If you have a student who is passionate about the arts this is THE place to be!
This is our first year with ICON and we have been thrilled with our child's experience so far. Our daughter attended a visit weekend and fell in love with the facility and was excited by the opportunity to attend a school with like-minded students who were focused in the arts. The school facility itself is gorgeous, and the small class sizes really allow the kids to focus on their academics in addition to their artistic specialties.
Our student came as a boarding student to Iowa Conservatory when they first opened. They have been there since. The experiences, support, education, and growth in their major have been monumentous. The staff are supportive and take the time to know your student. The ability to live in the resident hall has allowed them to grow as a self sufficient person able to grocery shop, cook meals, make doctor appointments, and take care of all their life necessities. Iowa Conservatory was decision that we would make all over again!
