Student Life

Campus Safety

We aim to create an environment where students feel safe both physically and emotionally. From personal key cards for building entry to attendance tracking, our campus security and safety measures are in place to maintain the physical safety of every student who walks through our doors.

Residential Life

As a boarding school, we provide a home-away-from-home for our residential students. Our student apartments are right across the street from school, offering apartment-style living for students who board. The Student Life team helps young artists develop the skills to live independently, preparing them for success both at school and beyond graduation.

Student Culture

Not only do we cultivate an environment where every student feels safe to express their creativity, but we strive to instill an culture of caring in every student that comes through our doors. The Student Life Team organizes events for the entire student body to socialize, get to know one another, and engage with the wider Iowa City community.

Campus Safety

We’re located in a historic, tight-knit neighborhood in Iowa City. Students can feel this in everything from the safe, walkable streets to the friendly local businesses with midwestern charm peppered throughout the area. Our newly renovated facilities encompass nearly 18,000 square feet inside the Brewery Square building.

As an open campus, students are free to leave throughout the day. Often, students venture into the surrounding neighborhood to grab a quick coffee or pick up their favorite meal at a local restaurant for lunch. Before leaving, students must check out (and later, check back in) with the front office.

The school building is open for students daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. During these hours, there is always a faculty or staff member available in the building to monitor student safety. After 6:00 PM, the building is locked — but of course, as a performing arts school, it’s not uncommon for students to need dance studios or rehearsal spaces after hours! When the building closes, students can return for pre-arranged rehearsal times with faculty or staff present.

To maintain campus safety, both the North and South Wings of ICON are kept locked at all times. Students gain access to the building using personal key cards. All visitors are required to check in with the front office before admittance to classroom spaces is granted.

Health & Wellness

The physical and emotional health and safety of our students is a top priority at ICON. Our commitment to caring for each student-artist does not stop at arts education and academic support. We know that in order to learn and grow, personal health must be flourishing and all students must be safe. There are multiple on-site supports for our students:

  • Our Student Life Team attends to each student’s quality of life inside and out of the classroom. A team of school counselors, live-in student residential assistants, and on-site support staff in the mental health field supports Student Life in this endeavor.
  • Student Life is in weekly contact with every student to ensure their well-being as they navigate the high school experience.
  • Licensed psychologists and social workers are available for “drop-in” appointments onsite for students that may need additional support.
  • Our Crisis Team is trained on best practices and school safety plans and procedures to assist in case of emergency (weather, medical, etc.).

If students indicate a need for further support, we provide families with a curated list of health referrals in the Iowa City area. We are lucky to have University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, a world-renowned institution filled with expert physicians, right in our neighborhood.

Residential Life

50% of students at  Iowa Conservatory choose to live in our residential halls. While living away from home can be daunting, the boarding experience allows for students to have the unique opportunity to fully engage in our vibrant community, foster independence, and acquire valuable skills such as cohabitating with others. The Student Life Team is here to guide you through the journey of being a boarding student at Iowa Conservatory.

Our student apartments are across the street from school, making the commute a mere two-minute walk from your front door to your classroom! Residence halls are staffed 24/7 by RA’s and Student Life staff who provide support, guidance, and a sense of community to students. They ensure safety, check students in, and enforce campus policies. Our personnel also teach life skills (cooking, cleaning, calmly addressing roommate issues, etc) to benefit students beyond their experience with us.
