Design and Production

This program is for high school students who engage in DESIGN & PRODUCTION. Areas of study and possible concentration include set design, costume design, and lighting and sound design.

Throughout this program they will develop a strong foundation in all areas of stage design. These students utilize their skills and interests to visually bring the stage to life with backgrounds, props, lighting, and costumes that they have designed from concept to stage.

Design and Production students will participate in a curriculum of interdisciplinary arts education, utilizing a project-based instructional approach. They will work collaboratively with dance, music, and theatre students on student-led/teacher-student co-directed creative works and productions.

Set Design

Create scenes and props for performances from the first concept sketches to building a model to constructing the set.

Costume Design

In-depth work in preparing actors for the stage such as developing sewing skills, designing and fitting costumes, wig-making, and make-up art.

Lighting and Sound Design

Develop the mood and tone of productions using color, texture, and sound effects. Coordinate lighting and sound with other elements of stage design such as costuming, props, and scenic design.

Course Catalog: Design & Production

0.25 Credit  |  1 Semester

This class is a prerequisite for the Costume Design class. Students will learn the basics of sewing, loading and using the machines, and how to use the costume shop safely and efficiently. Students will learn how to use a pattern and will make a final project that they can use or gift to someone else. This class will require some basic sewing materials that are essential for any young adult to own.

Students learn the fundamentals of designing for the theatre or for a story which culminates in a gallery presentation of their work on mannequins and through photography.

Students learn to advance their level of design through designing for a specific concept, play, or story and get to show their looks during a ‘runway’ event at the end of the semester.

This course provides students with a dedicated space to explore hands-on craft and design techniques. Students learn practical skills such as mask-making, basic armor construction, textile work, and other foundational craft methods used in theatre and visual storytelling. The class emphasizes safe tool use, problem-solving, and creative decision-making as students plan and build their own projects. For those interested in costume work, the course offers opportunities to design and construct simple costume pieces while developing an understanding of materials, structure, and function. Students are given the time and support to experiment, invent, and complete meaningful craft-based projects from start to finish.

Required ICON Class

This class aims to unlock the students’ personal creative journey. This project based class will use resources such as books, documentaries and interviews to help the students understand their own creative minds. They will do individual and group projects that explore elements of creativity. Whether they are design and production, visual art, theatre, dance, or music majors, this class is relevant for all young artists.

This is an intro course designed to unlock the students’ personal creative journey. This class teaches lighting design as a way of establishing story and mood in a production.

Students learn about the different techniques used for lighting a dance performance. Students also learn about some of the history of this unique artform and how they can light their own pieces.

Students will assist in lighting the either the spring musical or the fall play. Must be enrolled in or has already taken Lighting Design 101 or Lighting for Dance.

Students will learn the craft of Stage management by observing and watching a stage manager either in person or on film and writing about their observations, reading about and simulating the process a stage manager would go through, and talking and interviewing professional stagemanagers about their process.

Students will serve as the Stage Manager or the Assistant Stage Manager for either the Fall play or the Spring Musical. Must be enrolled in or have taken Stage management 101. Must be available during some of the spring musical evening rehearsals and/or tech week and run of the show for which they are enrolled.

This course introduces students to the basic principles and process of design as it applies to different disciplines like Theatrical Design, Architecture, Interior Design, Toy design, Lighting Design and more. Students participate in a variety of projects that aim to solve problems using design.

Students delve into the 7 elements of design through a STEAM lens. Pre-requisite is Intro to Design I

Students receive small group coaching on career options, college prep, and internship opportunities in the entertainment industry. They also consider how physical space and performance content inform production, design, and direction of shows through script analysis and the study of theatre stage and auditoria configurations.

Students learn about the 7 elements of design while compiling a master sketchbook that reflects their work on the elements.

This class explores the world of scenic design and how a set or environment can tell a story. Students will learn how to analyze a play for scenic needs, how to render that set in both 2D and 3D styles, and how to discuss their concept with a director. The class will also help build and load in either the fall play or the spring musical.

Students will assist in building the set for either the spring musical or the fall play. Must be enrolled in or has already taken Stagecraft 101.

0.25 Credit  |  1 Semester

Following J. Michael Gillette’s Theatrical Design and Production Textbook students will learn about the basics of Theatrical design from lighting to scenic construction. Students will learn the different types of stages, various jobs in technical theatre, and basic stage painting/building techniques.

0.25 Credit  |  1 Semester

Students learn basic stage makeup techniques and common hairstyles for the stage. Assist with a makeup and/or hair design for an ICON production with full design concepts and image boards for actor reference. Option for more credit for full designer role.

Students learn advanced level sewing skills that culminate in showing a small collection of looks they constructed during a ‘runway’ event at the end of the semester.
